Location

The Kilauea volcano is located on the island of Hawaii, and it is one of the five volcanoes (Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hual!lai, Mauna Lona, and K”lauea) that form this island, and one of the two active (Mauna Loa being the other one).

Tectonic plates

Pacific Plate is moving over the Hawaiian hotspot (volcanism for a long period of time – it means mantle plume (material that goes out of the boundary) is stemming from the boundary between Earth”s mantle and inner core), and this process created five volcanoes by which the biggest island of Hawaii is made of, and Kilauea is one of these five volcanoes.

Type

Kilauea is a shield volcano which means that it is a large volcano with shallow-sloping sides. In this case it is considered as stand-alone mountain range. Other volcanoes on the island of Hawaii form their own mountain ranges as well.

Eruption

Kilauea is the most active volcano nowadays in the world which is still “erupting”. Kilauea is not erupting in actual sense but only producing lava continuously from January 1983 (this process is called non-explosive eruption). Most of the lava comes from a vent called Pu`u `O`o and travels approx. 11 km to the sea (which created 0.77 sq. mi./2 km2 of new land from 1983). There are records from 1823 about Kilauea’s eruption, majority of them very small. In 1990, two towns –Kalapana and Kaimu– were destroyed due to the lava flow. The first major eruption of Kilauea happened in March 2008, although there was no lava released during this eruption (it’s suggested that the eruption happened due to hydrothermal or gas source). Kilauea doesn’t influence the life of inhabitants since the lava flow is guided through a non-occupied area.

Alberta, province
From beginning, the land now called Alberta, was in past part of Prince Rupert’s land. Later, land of Alberta was created as part of North West Territory (occupied by North West Company of Montreal). After long delays, Alberta gained its independence. The province is named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. Louise was spouse of General Governor of Canada, Marquess of Lorne. Several places within Alberta are also named after her.

Victoria, province
In year 1788, the colony of New South Wales was founded; this land was divided into two parts in those times. The second was called New Holland, maintained by colonial government. The first “city” within this area was Portland, but later on, current capital city of Victoria –Melbourne– was founded by John Batman in 1835. The area around Melbourne was called Port Phillip District and because of this, the “New Holland” separated in 1851 as Colony of Victoria. It is suggested the name was given in honour of Queen Victoria who ruled in this time. We can saw little changes in names, from Colony of Victoria, to shortened version, Victoria.

Cook Strait
Cook Strait is located between the North and South Island of New Zealand. Around October 6, 1769, James Cook –European explorer– discovered New Zealand, explored it and found the strait. To pay him tribute, the strait was named after him. His presence is , however, provable only by his records. In Maori language the strait is called ‘Raukawa’, meaning “bitter leaves.”

Marshall Islands
Marshall Islands is a bloc of several islands lying in Pacific Ocean. It is claimed that these small islands were settled around 4’000 years ago, however its written history begun to appear in 1526 when Spanish explorer Alonso de Salazar as a first saw these islands. The first European who touched the land was Captain John William Marshall in 1788, and named in his honour. In 1979 the country became independent and established Marshall Islands, the ones we know today.

Amundsen Sea
This sea, titled after Norwegian explorer, Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen, is located in Southern Ocean. This man guided the first expedition to the South Pole during 1910-1912.

Bass Strait
A strait between mainland of Australia, and its biggest island, Tasmania. The first man who sailed through, and discovered it, was Matthew Flinders which happened in 1798. Flinders decided to name this strait after the doctor on his voyage, George Bass. Flinders declare d that the naming of the strait after his friend, Bass, is not just for their strong friendship but also for the hard times that Bass was forced to spent in bad conditions on whaleboat.

Lake Eyre
The largest lake and the lowest point of Australia, Lake Eyre, has been named after a governor of Jamaica, Edward John Eyre. Besides being a very controversial governor, he is known as an English explorer of Australia. He was the first European to discover the lake in 1840.

Simpson Desert
Explorer Charles Sturt was the first European who saw this desert in 1845. The first man who crossed it was Ted Colson, in 1936. Cecil Madigan gave the name in 1939 after Alfred Allen Simpson, President of Royal Geographical Society, philanthropist and geographer.

Saint Lucia
The small island in Caribbean Sea is a part of Lesser Antilles. First Europeans came here around 16th century. Later on, French colonized St. Lucia. The name is one of the several names for Saint Lucy of Syracuse, Christian martyr. There is also St. Lucy’s Day on December 13.

Joseph Bonaparte Gulf
This big gulf, on the northern coast of Australia was named after Joseph Bonaparte, brother of famous Napoleon Bonaparte. The gulf is named in his honour, as he has been King of Naples, Sicily, Spain and the Indies. There is also lake named after him.

The program of this year’s edition of IFF Bratislava is being put together by a new program team led by Nenad Dukic, renowned Serbian film critic, program dramaturge, pedagogue and producer who has written film reviews, commentaries and expert papers for various Yugoslav, Serbian and international film magazines. During the past two decades, he was president or member of International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) juries at prestigious international film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, San Sebastian, Karlovy Vary or Montreal; he has served two electoral terms as FIPRESCI vice-president and today is the president of its Serbian section. He is a member of the Yugoslav Film Academy and vice-president of the Balkan Film Council based in Athens, Greece.

Another member of the program team is Pavel Smejkal, a graduate from the Faculty of Film and Television at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava where he majored in film science and currently pursues his doctorate here. He specializes in history of film journalism and the phenomenon of film stars. He writes film reviews, critics and interviews for domestic periodicals and web portals, focusing primarily on Slovak and Czech film production.

Erwin Houtenbrink who also sits on the IFF Bratislava program team is an art and film historian and a long-term collaborator of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. He was a commission member of the Hubert Bals Fund and still is a commission member of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF) and the Rotterdam Fund for Film Arts (DKC). He is currently free-lancing as script consultant and film communications advisor.

Last but not least, the IFF Bratislava is glad to announce the return of Radovan Holub to its program team. Mr. Holub is a Czech film journalist, pedagogue and expert in EU audiovisual issues who actively collaborates with the Slovak Audiovisual Fund and the European Film Promotion. He is a member of FIPRESCI and INTERFILM, an international organization that promotes and facilitates cooperation between churches and the film industry. He writes for various Czech and Slovak media on international film festivals such as Berlin, Cannes or Toronto.

A standard film festival of the urban type, the International Film Festival Bratislava aims to bring to its visitors a broad spectrum of films with a single goal in mind: to present the best and the most remarkable the world cinema has produced over the past year. The structure of program sections is dominated by international competitions, namely the Competition of First and Second Feature Films and the Competition of Documentary and Short Films.

The former contest will also feature a new Slovak film Visible World, a feature debut by director Peter Kristufek that will have its Slovak premiere at the festival.

At this stage, the program of the IFF Bratislava has entered the final pre-selection round. The ambition of the film festival’s 13th edition is to include into its program the films presented at the recent Venice Film Festival or the ongoing film festival in Toronto.
